Furthermore, as shown in Figure 14.3.2Ī, the points will cluster in a circular pattern whose center is the mean values for the two samples. If the variation in results is dominated by random errors, then we expect the points to be distributed randomly in all four quadrants, with an equal number of points in each quadrant. The quadrant ( , –), for example, contains those analysts that exceeded the mean for sample X and that undershot the mean for sample Y. A plus sign indicates the analyst’s result for a sample is greater than the mean for all analysts and a minus sign indicates the analyst’s result is less than the mean for all analysts. , a two-sample chart places each analyst into one of four quadrants, which we identify as ( , ), (–, ), (–, –) and ( , –). To analyze the results we represent each analyst as a single point on a two-sample scatterplot, using the result for one sample as the x-coordinate and the result for the other sample as the y-coordinate. ![]() One simple approach-accepted by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists-is to have each analyst analyze two samples that are similar in both their matrix and in their concentration of analyte. The design of a collaborative test must provide the additional information needed to separate random errors from the systematic errors introduced by the analysts. We can use the position of the distribution, to detect the presence of a systematic error in the method. Without additional information, we cannot separate the standard deviation for this pooled data into the precision of the analysis and the systematic errors introduced by the analysts. If several analysts each analyze the same sample one time, the variation in their collective results (see Figure 14.3.1ī) includes contributions from random errors and systematic errors (biases) unique to the analysts. The goal of a collaborative test is to determine the magnitude of all three sources of error. Partitioning of random errors, systematic errors due to the analyst, and systematic errors due to the method for (a) replicate analyses performed by a single analyst and (b) single determinations performed by several analysts. For a single analyst there is no way to separate the total systematic error into its component parts. ![]() \), relative to the sample’s true value, \(\mu\), is determined both by systematic errors inherent to the method and those systematic errors unique to the analyst.

The primary advantage of an AESA over a PESA is capability of the different modules to operate on different frequencies. Shrinking the entire assembly (the transmitter, receiver and antenna) into a single "transmitter-receiver module" (TRM) about the size of a carton of milk and arraying these elements produces an AESA. It gave rise to amplifier-transmitters with a low-power solid state waveform generator feeding an amplifier, allowing any radar so equipped to transmit on a much wider range of frequencies, to the point of changing operating frequency with every pulse sent out. The introduction of JFETs and MESFETs did the same to the transmitter side of the systems as well. The introduction of gallium arsenide microelectronics through the 1980s served to greatly reduce the size of the receiver elements, until effective ones could be built at sizes similar to those of handheld radios, only a few cubic centimeters in volume. Receiver electronics were also large due to the high frequencies that they worked with. In earlier systems the transmitted signal was originally created in a klystron or traveling wave tube or similar device, which are relatively large. PESAs quickly became widespread on ships and large fixed emplacements in the 1960s, followed by airborne sensors as the electronics shrank.ĪESAs are the result of further developments in solid-state electronics. Additionally, thanks to progress in electronics, PESAs added the ability to produce several active beams, allowing them to continue scanning the sky while at the same time focusing smaller beams on certain targets for tracking or guiding semi-active radar homing missiles. A PESA can scan a volume of space much quicker than a traditional mechanical system. The delays could be easily controlled electronically, allowing the beam to be steered very quickly without moving the antenna. The radio signals from the separate antennas overlapped in space, and the interference patterns between the individual signals were controlled to reinforce the signal in certain directions, and mute it in all others. PESAs took a signal from a single source, split it into hundreds of paths, selectively delayed some of them, and sent them to individual antennas. That led to the first practical large-scale passive electronically scanned array (PESA), or simply phased array radar. Starting in the 1960s new solid-state devices capable of delaying the transmitter signal in a controlled way were introduced. To scan a portion of the sky, the radar antenna must be physically moved to point in different directions. The transmitter elements were typically klystron tubes or magnetrons, which are suitable for amplifying or generating a narrow range of frequencies to high power levels. The receiver then sends the resulting output to a display of some sort. By measuring the time it takes for the signal to return, the radar receiver can determine the distance to the object. The transmitter is then disconnected and the antenna is connected to a sensitive receiver which amplifies any echos from target objects. Radar systems generally work by connecting an antenna to a powerful radio transmitter to emit a short pulse of signal. Unlike a PESA, which uses one transmitter/receiver module, AESA uses many transmitter/receiver modules which are interfaced with the antenna elements and can produce multiple, simultaneous radar beams at different frequencies. The first AESA systems were developed in the 1980s and had many advantages over the older PESA systems. Transmitting the signal in this way can produce differently shaped signals, effectively pointing the signal beam in different directions. The evolution of ASEA technology can be traced back to the early 1960s with the development of the passive electronically scanned array (PESA) radar, a solid state system which takes a signal from a single source and uses the phase shifter modules to selectively delay certain parts of the signal while allowing others to transmit without delay. The primary use of AESA technology is in radar systems.ĪESA systems are currently used on many different military platforms, including military aircraft and drones, to provide superior situational awareness. It consists of an array of antennas which form a beam of radio waves that can be aimed in different directions without physically moving the antenna themselves. Active Electronically Scanned Arrays commonly known as AESA is a phased array radar system. Rent your lake house on LakehouseVacations! Don't let management help you at all with your transactions if you know what you're doing because they may type in one little thing or change one little thing and then split the commission 50% sometimes 70% with you even though you did all the work. The pay structure is constantly changing and when you have questions about how it works no one can give you the answer. Was offered $10 an hour during interview but then found out that it was only $8 an hour and the pay structure change. The phones and devices the customers actually have to turn in will go missing and they try to blame it on you so cover your back. the manager will fall asleep on his customers lie to his customers and say that they need to turn in their phone for a special offer when in reality he is keeping the phone for his own personal use and then selling these phones sometimes even tablets. Management lies to their customers about pricing so that they can buy from them and not even a month later are back in the store yelling about their bill is not what they expected and they say there's nothing they can do about it now but we'll take a look at it as if they are fixing it and will waste your time for hours. Minimum training is giving to you and you are expected to know everything, if you don't know and ask any type of management they cannot give you an answer and direct you to the back office which they cannot give you a number or any direction to reach just another way of getting you out of there hair. Their large mastabas incorporated offering niches as well as corridors that could accommodate paintings of equipment for the afterlife and recesses to hold sculptures of the deceased owner. In the 3rd dynasty at Ṣaqqārah the most important private burials were at some distance from the step pyramids of Djoser and Sekhemkhet. In the great cemeteries of the Old Kingdom, changes in size, internal arrangements, and groupings of the burials of nobles indicate the vicissitudes of nonroyal posthumous expectations. They were built over many storage chambers stocked with food and equipment for the deceased, who lay in a rectangular burial chamber below ground. These flat-roofed, rectangular superstructures had sides constructed at first from mud brick and later of stone, in the form of paneled niches painted white and decorated with elaborate “matting” designs. Mastabas were the standard type of tomb in the earliest dynasties. In the following discussion, funerary temples built separately will be covered with temples in general and not as part of the funerary complex. In royal burials the chapel rapidly developed into a mortuary temple, which, beginning in the New Kingdom (c. 1539–1075 bce), was usually built separately and at some distance from the tomb. Most tombs comprised two principal parts, the burial chamber (the tomb proper) and the chapel, in which offerings for the deceased could be made. Mortuary architecture in Egypt was highly developed and often grandiose. Mud brick remained the domestic material, used even for royal palaces it was also used for fortresses, the great walls of temple precincts and towns, and for subsidiary buildings in temple complexes. ![]() From the Old Kingdom (c. 2575–2130 bce) onward, stone was generally used for tombs-the eternal dwellings of the dead-and for temples-the eternal houses of the gods. The two principal building materials used in ancient Egypt were unbaked mud brick and stone. ![]() Yet the dry, hot climate of Egypt allowed some mud brick structures to survive where they have escaped the destructive effects of water or humans.Įgyptian art and architecture: Architecture Many temples and tombs survived because they were built on ground unaffected by the Nile flood, whereas most ancient Egyptian towns were lost because they were situated in the cultivated and flooded area of the Nile Valley. Dynastic EgyptĪny survey of Egyptian architecture is weighted in favour of funerary and religious buildings, partly because of their location. For this reason, both Egyptian art and architecture appear outwardly resistant to development and the exercise of individual artistic judgment, but Egyptian artisans of every historical period found different solutions for the conceptual challenges posed to them. The architecture, similar to representational art, aimed to preserve forms and conventions that were held to reflect the perfection of the world at the primordial moment of creation and to embody the correct relationship between humankind, the king, and the pantheon of the gods. For most of the twentieth century, the metaphor of the “silent killer”, often linked with the word “insidious”, was a common feature of ovarian cancer discourse, and this article explores the reasons why that image became dominant and considers the role it played in both reflecting and confirming established understandings of the disease. The purpose of this article is to examine the history and implications of ovarian cancer’s association with metaphorical language. As the Oxford English Dictionary defines it, “insidious” does mean “treacherous”, or “full of wiles or plots, lying in wait to entrap or ensnare”, and is derived from the Latin insidiae, meaning “ambush”, and insidiosus, meaning “cunning” or “deceitful”. His patient, on the other hand, recognizes that the word is being used metaphorically. On the one hand, the physician understands himself to be using the word “insidious” as it has become part of clinical language, to refer to a gradual, undetectable and harmful physical process of the sort associated with ovarian cancer.
